... successfully set up an Xbox One for my wife's younger cousin. But damn that was like a 7 step process...back in my day it was: turn console on, insert game, play game. Now you gotta have accounts and verification and all kinds of crap. What's gonna happen when my son is old enough to play video games...background checks and bio-metric account log-ins?

If things aren't stopped right now, I'm betting private ownership of media will be outlawed and your kid will have to pay while he's playing.
Also, holodecks.

That's why I quit back in the PS2 era... Too much hassle to play games demanding an amount of time I don't have.
Back in the day, I could sit down for one hour and play halfway through Sonic or finish a world in Mario Bros 3. Nowadays, that amount of time wouldn't get me through the first cutscene.
Wow, I feel old. And cranky.

well, playing an hour or two of a game like forza or assassins creed or skyrim is actually very fulfilling

Just remembering a time when game consoles didn't hook up to the internet makes me feel old. Many people slightly older than me remember a time when nothing was connected to the internet.
This world's expanding too fast, man...

My problem with racing games is playing for only one single hour, haha... as for the other two, I haven't played Assassin's Creed, and, believe it or not, just couldn't like Skyrim. I tried really, really hard to like it, but the premise of the game, of a huge world to discover and explore, was too much for the game to live up to, at least in my opinion.
The huge world was definitely there, it just didn't have much to discover... :p
One recent game that I enjoyed beyond any expectations, however, was Dark Souls. I already expected it to be good, but playing through without knowing anything about it except for its high difficulty level, just blew my mind on so many levels. In a way, it was similar to Skyrim in the sense that you had a certain degree of freedom to go wherever you pleased (often dying in the process), but it was also a polar opposite in the sense that it was a self contained world with little to no plot exposition and subtle clues and hints about the actual events of the game. Every corner of the game world had something (often lethal) to discover and almost none of it made sense, which just added to the feel of hopelessness the game managed to convey. It is hands down one of the best games I've ever played.

Pay while playing? It's already here in the form of microtransactions. And if you read the EULAs, even those written in the 90s, they say that we're given a license to play the games, not own them.

So you could say it... Burnt you out?

I'm going even further.
You know the game-play streaming services Sony/MS are touting for their back catalog of older titles? Yeah, only once they (MPAA/RIAAA) get their way, we won't own consoles and we will just pay as we are playing through a streaming service.
No more physical media. No more "piracy." We pay out the ass any time we think about a song, movie, or game.
I'm probably being a bit fatalistic about the future, but I see writing on the wall indicating things could go badly for consumers if we don't raise hell and start fighting back.
Cause those insipid TOS "contracts" we all have to sign aren't a violation of our rights? They might be legal, but I'm not convinced they serve any purpose other than to enrich a corporation at our expense. Yes, I know that a corporation exists to make money. Pocket rape is going too far.

Ooooh me...and the sad part is I'm only 33. I have no issue with modern games and actually wish I had the time to play GT5/6 but was just shocked at how involved it now is just to set the damn thing up.

Fortunately, my 2 oldest sons are teenagers and figure this stuff out themselves. But yeah, it is far more complicated than the Atari system that shaped my gaming skillz.
